Aiken Archery Club
It all started with a Facebook post. Kristy Kerlin, a local resident, saw a post on Facebook about needing a place to hold the Aiken Archery Club. She decided to volunteer her backyard. Once she started teaching archery herself, she came to understand that archery can teach a lot of skills: teamwork, how to cooperate, and how to focus. Upon being asked on what made up her mind to teach homeschool students specifically, she stated, “that because I homeschool my own children, I want to give other homeschoolers that chance.” In archery practice, her students work on handling a weapon with safety, safety rules, improving scores and their aim. In February, they compete in a contest to test their archery skills. She said archery can open up opportunities like scholarships and even jobs! Managers check resumes for archery, since it can teach you focus, which is incredibly useful in many types of jobs. Mrs. Kerlin has thirty students that have signed up this year, ages ranging between ten through eighteen, with their equipment sponsored by Palmetto Independent Educators. I asked her, “what are your thoughts on homeschooling?” She told me that she thinks that homeschool is beneficial in a sense that, “parents can bond with their children and teach them at their own pace.” Mrs. Kerlin has two kids that homeschool and has been homeschooling for four years. If you would like to join the archery club, please contact the Aiken County 4H club at v2.4honline.com. -Jacob Lott Sign In (4honline.com)
Aiken Girls United
Investigator Kaylee Ewing reporting on the group Aiken Girls United. Aiken Girls United is a group for homeschool girls ages 11 to 16. The group’s main focus is on socialization. The group meets every Tuesday from 2pm -4pm. Each week the girls
play various types of games together. They play board and card games, Pictionary, charades, twister, giant Jenga and many other games. Aiken Girls United also has craft days and other special events such as a Tea Party coming up. All the girls have fun
and are always smiling. This creates friendships and lasting bonds that girls need. Homeschool doesn’t have to always be about learning, sometimes play and fun is just as important. That’s where Aiken Girls United comes in. Thank you, Investigator Kaylee Ewing

Art Nook
DEVELOPING CREATIVE MINDS -Neila Hart Aiken, SC If you love art, you will love
going to Art Nook! Art Nook has homeschool art classes on weekdays! I think
that art nook is a wonderful place to be to learn art. If you don’t have time to do
the classes you can always go to the Art Nook website and look at the summer
camps because they have tons of them for all different ages from four up to
adults. Art Nook is also a great place to make friends with kids and teachers. You
might be wondering what a normal day of art class is like! The first thing you do
in there is you meet your teacher. Next, you put on your art apron. Then you
think of something that you would like to draw. You can browse the sketching
books or go to the teacher in the computer room and she can print something
from the internet! Next go to your seat then get a pencil and paper and try to
draw it, no tracing! The teacher will help you with it. And that’s your independent
practice. The fun has just started, you also have the class! The fun thing about it
is you don’t know what you’re going to create until you get there! Each time is a
different project. I will name all of them; watercolors, acrylic paint, fancy color
pencils, and fancy colored markers. I love all the techniques they show you! What
makes art class so important? Art can boost your memory, because artists learn
to look at the world differently and more deeply. Art can help you realize that
mistakes happen, and can improve your communication skills! Art helps kids
practice creative thinking until you get it right. We can develop motor skills, art
teaches kids to persevere. Learning art with a professional helps you progress
quicker and you can meet new friends with the same interests, art is really fun
and relaxing. Leonardo da Vinci said, “The artist sees what others only catch a
glimpse of.” Art nook is a wonderful place to develop creative minds.

Twin Chestnut Farms
FINDING A TRUE PASSION AND EXPERIENCING FREEDOM Kylea Hart Aiken, SC For as long as I can remember, I’ve been obsessed with horses. I love everything about them; from their silky manes, soft brown expressive eyes, their gorgeous range of colors, to their velvety noses. Scientists have found that horseback riding helps people who are suffering from ADD, anxiety, autism, depression, dementia, and other mental health conditions. In addition to the many mental benefits, horseback riding also improves physical health. People who ride horses experience reduced stress, improved core strength and cardiovascular health, lower blood pressure, improved balance and coordination, increased muscle tone and strength, improved circulation, and flexibility, and feelings of relaxation. In short, riding horses just plain makes you feel great! Some might even say forming a bond with these majestic animals makes you feel free! Would you like some of these benefits in your life? Megan Russell, the owner and proprietor of Twin Chestnut Farms, is simply the best! The horses are sweet and well trained many of them are rescue horses. If you ask Miss Megan she will tell you they’re extra special because they’re so affectionate and grateful for their good life! Megan will start you off on pony, it’s mainly Chubbs who is the sweetest
pony you’ll ever meet. Miss Megan will help you tack your horse the first few lessons. then when you’re really good at it you tack your pony yourself, but she still supervises and helps if you need it. One of my favorite things about Twin Chestnut Farms is the variety of skill levels that can be helped! Wether you’re brand new or highly skilled there’s a program for you. Looking for a horse riding day? Fun trips are available from trail rides, downtown open roads, and Hitchcock wood hikes. You’ll find supportive and kind training to help riders prepare for shows and Megan always says wether you’re first or last she’s proud of you for doing YOUR best! Pam Brown said that, “Horses give us the wings that we lack.” If you want to get your wings Twin Chestnut Farms is a beautiful, supportive and wonderful place to start! Horseback riding has many benefits but that’s not why I do it. I do it because it’s my passion! There is nothing else that makes me feel more free.

I Interviewed My Dad by Anna Boruff I interviewed my Dad about home-school, and I chose him because he knows part of Christian School ideas. Some of the questions were about real math problems and the other question were about school. (But I made up all the questions). My Dad’s first question was what is 150 + 115 and he said 265, so I cheered because that was correct :). Question 2. was “Why do you like to help me with home-school?” My Dad said that he wanted to help me be smart so I would know things better (to be taken care of in the future). Then I asked him, “Can you help me do home-school faster – so that the day isn’t hours and hours long?”, to which he said “Mom helps with reading, writing, and arithmetic. And I only help you with catechism”; then Question 4 was “How do you know what to teach me?” Dad replied that when he was about 15 and 16 years old, the people in his class at his school were talking about evolution, that monkeys made people, but they didn’t. This made him sad but he didn’t lose his faith. He had become a believer, his Dad bought him some DVD (about Kent Hovind), and he also learned about Abeka Christian. Question 5: “Can you help me with hard math questions?” and he said, “No, Mom does the math.” Then I clapped and made him clap for Mom. My last questions were: “Who and what website do you use for home-school?” and “Where else can you use Abeka websites” and he replied, “Abeka.com”. Then he said that you can find people on Facebook Groups that are Christian. He said again, “Abeka.com is the website we use, and they are a great company/program”. I learned that Dad wants me to do home-school, because he wants me to be smart
AAA HOMESCHOOL BAND
Rollins shares knowledge of music with homeschool community
By Elliott Threlkeld, Cardinal School of Excellence
Band has a positive impact on the homeschool community. Barb Rollins is founder and director of
the AAA Homeschool Band and has been teaching band for 56 years. Rollins wanted to become a
band director after she picked up a trumpet for the first time. She was influenced by a homeschooler’s desire to play an instrument. “A lady came up to me and said, ‘I noticed you playing your trumpet with one hand, so I guess you could teach somebody to play the trumpet with one hand.’ “I said ‘I guess so.’ She said her son couldn’t use both hands… and I started teaching him. And then the thought came that ‘maybe there’s more homeschoolers that would like to take band.’” During her years of teaching, her favorite piece to conduct is “Bugler’s Holiday.” Some of her former students work in musical careers, including Stephanie Threlkeld, Mallory Berley, and David Vickery. Two of her recent homeschool graduates, Micah McNamee and James Rochester, are in college for careers in music. Rollins said countless students have benefited from the homeschool band. “It helps homeschoolers get to know other homeschoolers and to help them see if music is their thing,” Rollins said, “but also provides an opportunity for homeschoolers to learn, because otherwise most communities don’t have a homeschool band.” Rollins and the AAA Homeschool Band provide students with musical skills, performance opportunities, fun and friendship. For more information on the AAA
Homeschool Band, contact Rollins at 803-645-3292.
